Outdoor Concrete Paint Ideas for Florida Patios, Pool Decks and Driveways

Ideas that work outdoors

• Solid-color concrete stain. Acts like a thin paint, hides old stains and comes in many colors. A good option for patios and walkways.
• Translucent or penetrating stain. Soaks in rather than sitting on top, so it cannot peel. Concrete keeps its natural texture, with mottled, earthy color.
• Textured pool deck coatings. Acrylic, knockdown-style finishes stay cooler underfoot than bare concrete and add grip around pools. Light colors reflect more heat.
• Painted rugs and borders. A stenciled pattern or a painted border can define an outdoor seating area. Use a concrete or porch-and-floor paint, and seal it.
• Flake systems for lanais and walkways. The same broadcast-flake systems used in garages work in covered outdoor spaces when the topcoat is UV-stable.
• Driveway coatings. Driveways take tire traffic, oil and heat. Penetrating stains and sealers usually outlast paints there.

Prep is most of the job

1. Clean thoroughly. Pressure wash, degrease oil spots and treat mildew. Let the slab dry fully.
2. Check for sealers. Water that beads on the surface means a sealer is present, and most coatings will not bond to it. Grinding or a sealer stripper comes first.
3. Test for moisture. Tape a square of plastic sheet to the slab overnight. If it is damp underneath in the morning, moisture is coming up through the concrete and a film-forming coating may lift.
4. Profile the surface. Smooth or troweled concrete needs grinding or etching so the coating can grip.
5. Repair cracks. Fill cracks and spalls with a patch made for concrete.

Weather and timing

Check the label for the surface temperature range and dry time before rain. In summer, start early in the morning so the coating is not baked by midday heat or caught by an afternoon storm.

Slip resistance

Wet painted concrete can be slick, especially around pools. Add an anti-slip grit to the topcoat, or choose a textured coating.
